David M’F’ing Lucas

I’ve long been a huge fan of standup comedy. I devour it. I will watch almost any special that remotely interests me but I especially love roast comics. I have always said if I ever get married I want my groomsmen to all prepare roast material about me in leu of speeches or anything. Maybe six months or so ago my buddy James introduced me to a podcast/youtube show called Kill Tony. The premise is there’s a panel of judges who are also comics and they have comics come on stage to do 1 new minute of standup every week followed by an interview with the host Tony Hinchcliffe. Some of the comics are regulars on the show and some of the comics are picked at random out of a hat. That’s where I was introduced to David Lucas.

David is a roasting machine. He and the host Tony often spend ten minutes an episode just making fun of each other, David is one of those guys who is just effortlessly funny. He has “it”. I saw he was performing in Irvine, CA which is an hour and change from me in LA so I took the drive out and saw his set. Afterwards, I waited in the selfie line to have a chat and see if we could set up a shoot. He had a few minutes the next day before a show so I drove out to his tour managers house and we did a quick ten minute or so shoot in their living room. I often will explain the portraits I take on this blog and try to break down lighting but these are all just one light because I didn’t have the room to use more than that. Shot on a Canon 5Ds with a 24-70mm 2.8L and a Flashpoint 400 strobe in a large glow XL octa.
